Aribo’s EPL debut ends in a big loss

Joe Aribo made his first competitive appearance for Southampton in the Premier League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Nigerian joined the Saints from Rangers last month and has been heavily involved in their pre-season tours, scoring a stunning goal against Villarreal.

He secured a starting spot on the trip to north London, but there was little the midfielder could do to prevent the side from losing 4-1 in the league opener.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl played Aribo up front in a 5-3-2 formation alongside Armstrong – and it just didn’t work.

He did not receive the services needed to provide and was isolated for most of the game.

The visitors led through James Ward Prowse but goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier led Spurs at half-time.

Mohammed Salisu’s second-half own goal kept Spurs in control, before Dejan Kulusevki sealed victory with the fourth goal.

After the match, Hasenhuttl admitted his side never seemed to match Spurs’ feet.

“It was a bit like the opponent kicked into high gear after 20 minutes and we couldn’t keep up.”

“It’s frustrating to see how big the gap is between the two teams,” the Saints manager said.
