Athletics set to open outdoor season on March 5

GREAT RIO VALLEY –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Intercollegiate Athletics Department announced the schedule for the upcoming outdoor athletics season on Tuesday.

The Vaqueros will compete in six competitions before the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Outdoor Championships, starting March 5 at Texas’ Longhorn Invitational.

The UTRGV will travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the South Texas Showdown presented by the Navy Army Community Credit Union on March 18.

The WAC Championships are scheduled for May 12-14 in Seattle, Washington. The NCAA West preliminary round will be held May 26-28 in Fayetteville, Ark., followed by the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11.

In 2021, the UTRGV won eight WAC Outdoor Championships and had six student-athletes advance to eight events in the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

“I am extremely excited about our competition program this outdoor season,” said the UTRGV head coach. Shareese Hicks noted. “We will face formidable opposition along the way that will set us up to be in good standing for our outdoor conference championships. The plan is to build momentum every game. This team is more than capable of doing that.”
