Boxing World C’ships: Sumit enters pre-quarters

Indian boxer Sumit (75 kg) qualified for the pre-quarterfinals of the AIBA Men’s World Championships on Saturday after claiming a complete victory over Tajikistan Abdumalik Boltaev.

Sumit won 5-0 in the fight against Boltaev, who was not lacking in intention but was definitely not close to the Indian when it came to hitting cleanly.

Sumit was also given a second-round warning for repeatedly hitting Boltaev in the back of the head despite the referee’s warning, but the one-point tie-up had no impact on his control over the procedure because he became a unanimous winner.

On Friday, in a late night fight, Nishant Dev (71 kg) rallied to defeat Mauritian Merven Clair 4-1 and also secure a place before the quarter-finals.

Later Saturday, five-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa (63.5 kg) will face Sierra Leone John Brown in the round of 16.

Sachin (80 kg), who won a first-round pass, will face American Robby Gonzales in another final 32 game.

Govind Sahani (48kg) will play in the pre-quarterfinals against Georgian Sakhil Alakhverdovi.

The Gold Centerpiece winners will walk away with a cash prize of $ 100,000.

The silver medalists will receive $ 50,000 and the two bronze medalists will receive $ 25,000 each. The total scholarship is $ 2.6 million.

India is represented by its reigning national champions in all weight classes.
