Croatia take the lead over Italy in Davis Cup quarter-finals | Sports News

TURIN, Italy (AP) – Borna Gojo gave Croatia an early lead over Italy on Monday in the Davis Cup quarter-finals, beating Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2 in of the opening game for the best -3 series.

US Open champion Marin Čilić will next face 20-year-old Jannik Sinner.

“We knew we had to try to get a run of two singles,” Gojo said. “We are confident in doubles.”

Played in three cities, each match on indoor hard courts is a best-of-three series comprising two singles matches and one doubles match.

Gojo, who is 252 places below 27th Sonego, was down 4-1 in the first set before forcing the tiebreaker. Sonego rallied in the second set but continued to make mistakes in the third, including losing three break points in the seventh game.

“I knew the third set was one or the other’s game – one set, anything can happen,” Gojo said. “It was a really tough game at 4-2 and I managed to hold on. So yeah, I’m really happy.

The other quarter-finals are: Great Britain versus Germany; Serbia versus Kazakhstan; and the Russian team against Sweden.

The semi-finals and the final will be played in Madrid.
