The event, held for the first time at the beach, was held in conjunction with the Moto Beach Classic, a Super Hooligan event that began in 2017.

Justin Barcia, one of 32 pro riders competing in the Red Bull contest, said holding the event in Huntington State Beach makes sense with the growing Supercross scene and fan base in Southern California.

Still, Barcia, who started racing in 2009, called the seaside race “surreal”.

“We just don’t get that kind of stuff in our sport,” he said. “Usually we are in the countryside, in the woods or in a stadium.”

The Red Bull Straight Rhythm was launched in 2014 at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona. It uses a half-mile straight track – it’s a head-to-head drag race on dirt. Like most events, it was canceled in 2020 and 2021.

Red Bull spent more than a week building Saturday’s course, which used three of the beach parking lots, by trucking into the dirt. A restroom building was buried for one of the daredevil features.

The Moto Beach Classic is a street bike race on an oval-shaped track.

Barcia, from the east coast, recently moved to Orange to be closer to sponsors and training grounds, he said.

“The Supercross scene here is huge,” he said. “All the racing teams are based here in Southern California. For us, it’s great for training; 95% of the time it’s sunny, we can do a lot of practice and ride.

He hoped Saturday’s races at the beach would bring new fans to the sport.

“It’s something no one has ever done, it’s super unique,” he said. “Red Bull is great at bringing new people into the sport and showing that dirt bikes are pretty cool.”
