Maja’s move to Birmingham City fails

Josh Maja will stay with Girondins Bordeaux after his planned transfer to English Championship club Birmingham City fell through.

Birmingham were keen to bring the striker back to England, after agreeing personal terms, but talks between the clubs broke down last night.

Maja is now likely to sign a two-year contract extension with the French side, with a clause that will allow him to leave as a free agent, if they fail to regain promotion to the top flight.

The player made headlines a few weeks ago after taking a 50 per cent pay cut to help ease the financial burdens at the struggling club.

Maja joined Bordeaux from Sunderland in 2019. He also spent time on loan at Fulham and Stoke City.

Maja has scored 13 goals in 58 games for the Girondins.

He netted one and two assists in the team’s 4-0 win over Quevilly-Rouen on Tuesday.
