COLUMBUS — Ohio High School State track and field competition returns to Ohio State University.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association made it official Thursday, announcing that the 115th annual boys’ track meets and the 48th annual girls’ track meet will be held June 3-4 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The state lacrosse championships will move to Historic Crew Stadium on June 4.
“We are very pleased to have our State Athletics and Lacrosse tournaments taking place at these two fantastic facilities,” said Doug Ute, executive director of OHSAA. “We appreciate the support and cooperation of the folks at Ohio State and the crew so that our student-athletes and our communities can have a great tournament experience to end their season.”
Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, a fan favorite, last hosted the state championships in track and field in 2019. In 2020, spring sports were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2021, the state meet was held at three Columbus-area high schools – Division III at Westerville North, Division II at Pickerington North, and Division I at Hilliard Darby.
The three venues sold 24,127 tickets combined, according to OHSAA. attendance was down from the last time it was held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in 2019, when 28,852 people attended for the two-day event.
It was at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium from 2004-19 after being at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium from 1999-2003.
The State Lacrosse Championships have been held at Ohio Wesleyan University since OHSAA began sanctioning the sport in 2017. The historic Crew Stadium, located on the State Fairgrounds from Ohio in Columbus, was the home of Major League Soccer’s Columbus crew from 1999 to 2020 before the team moved to its new home, Lower.com Field, in downtown Columbus. OHSAA has entered into a three-year agreement with the Crew to host the State Lacrosse Championships at the historic Crew Stadium (2022, 2023, 2024).
Historic Crew Stadium is the first football-dedicated stadium in the United States and serves as the home venue for Columbus Crew 2, Columbus Crew’s second team, playing in MLS NEXT Pro.
Previously, the OHSAA announced the locations of spring state tournaments for boys’ tennis at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, softball at Firestone Stadium in Akron, and baseball at Canal Park in Akron.
